Murray Cod are one of the largest freshwater apex predatory fish in the world. It is Australia's largest freshwater fish growing to over 100lb and 140cms in length and the oldest recorded fish lived for 48 years! Any fish caught over the magic metre mark is classed as a trophy fish. Cod can only be found in freshwater systems including rivers, dams and impoundments through out QLD, NSW, VIC & SA making them the premier freshwater sportsfish in those areas.
Cod are their systems apex predator and as a result are perfect for lure fisherman. They are known to eat everything from fish, crustaceans, birds, lizards, turtles, snakes, mice and frogs. If it enters the water a Cod will probably eat it. This makes it very exciting for lure makers to experiment with different animals other than your traditional fish shapes.

Dams & Impoundments - There are many different ways to fish for Cod in dams and impoundments. Depending on how you want to fish, you can throw surface, wake baits, swimbaits, glide baits, sub surface, spinnerbaits/chatterbaits or hard bodies. Look for areas that will suit the use of these lures - points, fallen timber, weed beds, stone boulders and drop offs. Cod tend to hold in these types of structure for protection and ambushing prey. As with most fish, major bite times are sunrise and sunset but also concentrate your efforts on moon rise and moon set times.
Freshwater Rivers - Fish heavy structure such as fallen trees, rock bars, eddies adjacent to faster flowing water and rapids or areas of high water disturbance. Surface fishing is very popular in rivers around sunset, sunrise and after dark when the fish are active.
