The legend goes that during the 18th and 19th centuries, English navy recruiters would incentivise men to join the service by offering them a king's shilling. Some shady recruiters would boost their numbers by dropping a chilling into a drunk men's beer while they weren't looking. If the man drank the beer, he was deemed to have accepted the offer and would be dragged off to sea the following morning. Eventually, patrons were advised to check their beer for shillings by saying "bottoms up!". True or not, it's a good story and we're advocates for prioritising good yarns over the facts so thought it'd go good on a tee.
